As Win7 RC version is going to release, many guys want to download one and try. However, Win 7 image file reaches about 2G size, and after installation, it occupies abut 10G space. It takes a long time if use general disc installation, besides, if there’s no DVD at hand, CD installation would be a really unpleasant job.
Because of curiosity, few days ago, I downloaded Win 7 too. As my laptop has no DVD-ROM, so I searched many methods about disk installation. Some could work, but some could not. Finally I found one good solution, something like the one through the Internet. But I experienced it and it did work.
Next, I will introduce the method about disk installation, hope it helps. This method is also proper for the one with DVD-ROM.
1. Software prepared
1) Win 7 image file. It’d better to be RC version.
2) Virtual CD-ROM software
I use Damon 4304-lite version, which could work in XP system.
2. Installation
1) Create a folder on any partition except C on original system, such as D:\win7;
2) Open the Win7 image file downloaded on local hard disk with Virtual CD-ROM , copy the files all to D:\win7;
3) Copy the files bootmgr (a hidden file, you need to change it “Display all files” from file—view) and boot directories under D:\win7 to the root of drive C, don’t change the original name. And make sure it’s under the root of drive C, otherwise, the boot would fail.
