Q:
About every 5 minutes, my laptop would restart, and this happens when I’m doing some word process or browsing webpages. Is this normal? If there’s no problem, how long would Dell Inspiron 6400 fan gets starting? How should I control my fan? Is there any better control option to balance fan running or system heating?
A:
1) If your laptop is heated enough to let the fan start to cool down, then this should be normal. If you plan to let the fan run slower or just shut it down, it’s really not that good. But if you do want to do this, you can install software I8Kfangui to control fan and supervise the temperature of the laptop.
Of course, you can control your fan running speed with Speedfan software or you could check the control option in BIOS, but personally, I think the previous option is better. For general laptops, if temperature exceeds a certain limitation, the fan would auto start to cool down system.
2) Whether the temperature belongs to normal range? It needs careful inspection. Generally speaking, hard disk’s temperature is about 52 degrees, which belongs to normal range. If overheated, probably it is because of a damaged intake or the intake is covered by dust. At this moment, you need to do some cleaning job, after finishing cleaning up the dust inside the laptop, you’d better to try updating your BIOS from Dell support center, then you should be careful when you do this, besides, follow its direction carefully or other options. Run application such as Speedfan to control your fan speed.
