The "Free Public Wi-Fi" works on a computer to computer network. You can tell by the computer icon instead of the usual antenna when you check for wireless networks. Don't click on one with a computer to computer network. If you must use Wi-Fi don't use it for sensitive information. "I probably would surf. At Reagan National Airport, Matt Beekman, sat at a restaurant with a free Wi-Fi connection but he wasn't using it. He doesn't use Wi-Fi. Instead, he has a wireless card. When he's at the airport or stays in hotels, it's the only thing he trusts.
"When you look at the network you can see 3 or 4 other computers on the system that would be in neighboring rooms. That scares me enough. That means if I can see theirs. They can see mine," Beekman said.
You can change the settings on your computer to protect information. Just go to the settings for your network connections. Click on wireless networks then advanced. You'll find three choices. The default allows any network connection. The second allows access points only which is the one you want. The third allows access by computer to computer networks, which you don't want.
