Laptops are very expensive and hold a great deal of our personal data. I was completely panicked when I had my first laptop spill. Instead of rescuing the laptop, I rushed it off to a computer repair shop. You can save your laptop and save money if you know how to clean up laptop spills.
Shut Down the
Laptop Immediately
The first step in cleaning up laptop spills is to shut down the laptop immediately. You can close the laptop for it to automatically shut down or you can use the shut down mode. It is imperative to use speed in shutting down the laptop when a spill has happened.
Unplug the Laptop Immediately
You should unplug the laptop immediately after you shut it down without jerking the cord out of the outlet. This will help to save your laptop and not cost you more money to replace the plug-in unit. It can be easy to simply yank the plug when you are panicked. Take a deep breath and just unplug as you normally would do so.
Wipe Off the Laptop
If you have a towel, napkin or even paper towel handy, wipe off the laptop. Get up as much of the spill as possible.
Drain the Laptop Only in One Direction
Drain the laptop by tilting it on the side. Just tilt to one side. Don't try and drain by tilting in several different directions. You will end up spreading in pockets of liquid from the laptop spill further around the inside of the laptop.
Slowly Turn the Laptop Upside Down
Slowly turn the laptop upside down once you have drained it. Drain again in the same direction that you did in the previous step. This will continue to remove any pockets of fluid from the laptop spill.
