My computer is really slow and freezes a lot.. I used many anti-virus programs without any apparent effect. Do I have some sort of super-virus?
There are three possibilities for this: viruses, software, and hardware. Thus it does not necessarily mean that your computer has a virus. For example, if you have a firewall, it may seem like your computer is functioning slower when in reality your firewall is just slowing down your connection speed, and thus making the loading time longer. Thus, we should first determine which of the three possibilities is causing this problem.
1. If your computer??s constant freezing is caused by a virus, then you should notice large spikes in your computer??s memory usage. You can check your computer??s memory usage by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del, entering Task Manager, and then clicking on the Processes tab. If your memory usage is 85+% and your memory is sufficient for your OS (256+ MB for Windows XP, 128-256 MB for Windows 2000, etc.) , then it is possible that you have a virus and you should check to see if your anti-virus program is up to date. If your memory is not sufficient for your OS, you should add more memory.
2. Perhaps you have software problems. By downloading files from the Internet, you leave yourself open to hack programs and spyware. You may also have too many programs that run on startup. It is also possible that a hacking program, which may cause your computer to crash when you attempt to browse the Internet, altered your Internet Explorer program.
3. It is possible that there is a problem with your hard drive. Perhaps it was not setup properly in BIOS, or there are bad sectors in your hard drive, or there are logic errors in your hard drive.. Bad sectors or logic errors may cause corruption to key files, which may lead to your computer crashing. It is also possible that your hard drive??s capacity is too small. If it is filled to capacity, it will not have any space left to run the program.
A few things that you can do to fix this problem include:
a. Upgrade your anti-virus with the latest updates and use the best anti-virus program (We have the best anti-virus program at Computer Care Centre).. Make sure to do a full hard drive scan.
b. If this does not work, find another hard drive that works (make sure it works on other computers first), and swap your hard drive with this one. Reformat this hard drive and install Windows. Then check your memory usage and see if it has gone down. If your memory usage has dropped, then the problem is in either your software or your hardware. The first way you can get around this is to set this new hard drive as the master and your old hard drive as the slave. You can also reformat your old hard drive using DOS after backing up any files that you want to keep. After formatting, it will inform you if there are any bad sectors. Then you will know whether or not your hard drive had bas bad sectors that could cause your computer to freeze or not. If no bad sectors were found, use a file provided by the manufacturer to test your hard drive??s logic capabilities.
c. When backing up your files, be careful as some viruses or hack programs will automatically install themselves on the backup disk and will be installed onto your computer when you load the backed up files. Thus, you should scan your backup disk for spyware and viruses before copying any files from it.
