Little tip: solve the problem that spotlight speed slows down

Applied range: Intel-based Mac

Symptom: on Intel-based Mac, after installing Windows XP, Spotlight searching speed slows down much.

Pathogeny: this is because Mac OS could not deal with the index information on Windows partition, so when search, after quickly disposing the information on Mac OS X partition, it’ll take quite a long time to deal with the partition of Windows XP system.

Solutions:

1. You could try dragging all folders on Windows partition to the folder privacy of preferences under Spotlight. If it’s FAT3 partition, it should be all right (I haven’t tried yet), but if it’s NTFS format, probably you could not drag to.

2. If you cannot drag there, then there’s one way, that is to unmount the Windows partition (you could unmount the partition with Disk Utility). But what if Windows partition could be unmounted automatically each time start up the machine! Actually, it’s quite easy to do so:

1) Open application--applescript--script editor;

2) Add this line there: do shell script "/usr/sbin/diskutil unmount /Volumes/partition name";

Notice: “Partition name” is the name of your Windows partition, it’s better there’s no blank in the name.

3) When save, you’d better to choose Application, and save as the name such as “Unmount Windows Partition”;
