Now let’s talk about what is WIMAX:

WiMAX（World Interoperability for Microwave Access）is a wireless MAN technology based on IEEE802.16 criterion.

WiMAXzz began establishing criterion since 2001 and authenticated the chip and device. Scale-economic made it possible to lower down cost, and WiMAX application scope also expanded.

Now WiMAXzz includes chip manufacturers (such as Intel), device providers (such as Alcatel), telecom operators (such as BT England Telecom), the industry chain is already quite complete. So far there’s numerous experiment network with the global, and the device according with WiMAX criterion could be used for commercial usage, and large-scale application was already carried out.

WiMAX has an outstanding speciality compared to WiFi: further covering radius.

WiFi could primary solve the wireless connection problem within 100 meters, which belongs to WLAN scope. At widen places, WiFi could reach 300 meters at most, and in the room generally the valid covering range is within 100 meters. However, WiMAX could reach about 50 kilometer covering range at most, which belongs to WMAN scope. And the classic applied covering range is 6-10 kilometers. Compared to 3G, it provides bandwidth less than 2M. and each WiMAX station could divide 6 sectors at most, and each sector could provide 70M independent bandwidth, and the covering range of each base station is 10 times as much as 3G base station. Therefore, somebody thought that WiMAX would take the place of 3G and become the next mainstream technology in communication field.

And based on this, WiMAXzz developed 802.16a, whose work band is lower than 802.16. It mainly works at the band range 2-10 G, so the ability that signal could get around obstacle has been improved greatly. So far it could already support non-line-of-sight transmission, which means that there could be trees or constructions blocking between the base station and client. WiMAX applied filed had been widened.

As for the problem that 802.16a has no movability performance, WiMAX established 802.16e criterion based on this. And according to the 802.16e criterion, handheld PDA or mobile computing devices would not interrupt if using wireless connection. Therefore, WiMAX got the movability ability.

From these views, we can conclude that WiMAX is a wireless network technology having a wider application than WiFI. So far, it seems there’s no power could stop the popularity of WiMAX, the only suspense is that what to do with WiMAX.
