How to use Windows XP to enable remote controlling

In Windows XP/2003 it is possible to enable remote controlling by enabling remote assistance as well as remote desktop. By using Telnet, which is included in Windows XP, we can make Windows 2003 the server and Windows XP the client in this Telnet connection.

Step 1: Starting a Telnet server

In Windows 2003, start the Command Prompt and type "net start Telnet". This will start the Telnet program. Another way to open Telnet is to go through the Start Menu. Click on the Start Menu, click on Programs, then click on Administrative Tools and then select Services. Select the Standard tab at the bottom and scroll down until you see "Telnet". Double click this icon and another window will appear. Change the startup type to automatic and then click apply. Another button will be available to you now. Click this button (it says "Start"). Now click OK to close this window.

Step 2: Connecting with Telnet

In Windows XP, open the Command Prompt and then start telnet by typing "telnet or :". For example, "telnet 192.168.0.1". Note: the port was not added in the example because the default port for telnet is 23 if nothing is entered; however, if the port is different on the server, you must enter the port in the command line as well. After you hit enter, this message should appear: You are about to send your password information to a remote computer in Internet zone. This might not be safe. Do you want to send anyway(y/n):". For security reasons, select no. You will then be asked for a login and a password. These must be a user account along with the matching password on the host computer. After connecting, just type exit to disconnect.

If you don't type the correct username and matching password, a message will appear that says "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password". The reason this occurs is because the username you used does not have permission to access the host computer or, as the message suggests, the password you entered is incorrect. To fix this, go to the Windows 2003 server, click the Start Menu, select Programs, select Administrative Tools and then click on Computer Management. On the left hand side, select Local Users and Groups, then select Users. Then on the right hand part of the window, right click on an empty space and select New User.
