Moving files and setting from Windows 2000 or XP to Vista is simplified using the Windows Easy Transfer wizard. You can transfer user accounts, program settings, and Internet favorites, Emails and data files such as pictures, music and videos.
Login to your new Vista computer, which is the PC you'll be transferring the files to. Access the Wizard by navigating to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools> and click Windows Easy Transfer. Click Next, then Start A New Transfer. You will be asked to specify which computer you're using, so you'll click This Is My New Computer.
You will then be asked if you have the Windows Easy Transfer USB cable, which is a special cable you can purchase at your local computer shop. Or you can specify that you do not have the cable.
If you do not have the cable, you will need to specify that you do not have the transfer software installed on your old PC. Windows Vista will prompt you for a location to install the transfer wizard software. You can select a drive or network location (depending on how you want to access the wizard on the old PC). If you selected a CD drive, you may be prompted to insert a blank CD.
You will then need to go to the old PC and login under the username whose settings you want to transfer to the Vista machine. If you want to transfer multiple user settings, login under the admin. Insert the CD with the transfer software on it to proceed. If autorun doesn't launch the program, you will need to navigate to the executable file MigWiz.exe in through My Computer.
